Amla is perhaps the single most oftenmentioned herb in the ayurvedic classic. Amalaki(Emblica officinalis, Amla or Indian Gooseberry) is revered by ayurvedichealers as a "wonder rasayana" capable of delivering a diverse rangeof benefits to the physiology. It has a reputation as a powerful rejuvenatingherb. This precious fruit is reputed to have the highest content of vitamin C and E of any natural occurring substances in nature. It promotes ojas andnourishes all the tissues of the body and is useful in the treatment of ulcersand hyperacidity.

A research team discovered that when Amalakiis taken regularly as a dietary supplement, it counteracts the toxic effects ofprolonged exposure to environmental heavy metals, such as lead, aluminum, andnickel.. In the studies the pro-oxidant or oxygen radical scavenger qualitiesof emblica suggest that it is also very effective in lowering the risk ofmany  chronic disorders. Other studies indicate that it is much moreeffective than Vitamin C alone in reducing chromosomal abnormalities. Amalakijuice has twenty times more vitamin C than orange juice, and natural tanninsprevent oxidation of the vitamin content in a dry condition in other words,it is heat stable.
