General Description

Known  as  Chebulic Myrobalan  or   Indian Gallnut, Haritaki is an importantcomponent of Triphala, a classical ayurvedic formula based on 3 types offruits. The herb is being called the Tibetan king of medicine and isoften depicted in the extended palm of the Buddha.It is one of the few herbs owing 5 tastes out of the total 6:sour, bitter, pungent and astringent. It is a powerful rasayana,  regarded as  a  long-life elixir, as it balances all the three doshas. Can be used both externallyand internally.

Interesting about this herb isthat for each season its preparation is different. In autumn it has to be takenwith sugar, in winter with long pepper, in spring with honey and in summer withjaggery.

Properties

Haritakicontains astringent principles, mainly tannins (25%-35%),15 amino-acids, sugarand other minerals.

Actions:

Haritaki is used in cases of :

• digestive diseases( flatulence,  vomiting,  hiccup, colic, hyper acidity  & heartburn, habitual constipation, hemorrhoids, worm infestation)
• urinary diseases
• liver disorders, diabetes

If taken after meals it prevents imbalance of any of thehumors due to bad food or drink. It promotes wisdom, intellect and eyesight.
